本屆共有五家企業與機構獲獎,分別為獲頒「創新典範獎」(Icon of Innovation)的Jaxon Lane、「卓越典範獎」(Beacon of Excellence)的Ryoko Rain、「年度慈善公益獎」(Philanthropy of the Year)的Onco-Ballet Foundation、「年度餐廳獎」(Restaurant of the Year)的Seven Grams,以及「年度遠見獎」(Visionary of the Year)的The Plug Drink,呈現亞裔社群跨越不同產業的創造力與影響力。

Alexander Tang

「年度慈善公益獎」(Philanthropy of the Year)由Onco-Ballet Foundation獲得。

獲頒「年度餐廳獎」(Restaurant of the Year)的Seven Grams,由執行長Weiwei Shao領導。

「年度遠見獎」(Visionary of the Year)得主The Plug Drink,則展現韓裔創業者在健康保健市場的發展成果。

Asian Business League of Southern California Honors Five Organizations at 39th Annual Awards Gala
“Rooted to Rise” celebrates cultural heritage, entrepreneurship and community service
The Asian Business League of Southern California (ABL) held its 39th Annual Awards Gala on October 29, 2026, at the Sheraton Los Angeles San Gabriel. Under the theme “Rooted to Rise,” the evening celebrated achievements in business innovation, cultural heritage and community service within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
Five businesses and organizations received awards: Jaxon Lane, honored as an Icon of Innovation; Ryoko Rain, recognized as a Beacon of Excellence; Onco-Ballet Foundation, named Philanthropy of the Year; Seven Grams, awarded Restaurant of the Year; and The Plug Drink, recognized as Visionary of the Year. Together, the honorees reflected the creativity and influence of Asian American entrepreneurs and community organizations across perse fields.
In his remarks, ABL President Alexander Tang reflected on the organization’s more than four decades of service. He described ABL as a nonprofit bridge connecting business and community leaders across generations while fostering relationships and business opportunities throughout Southern California and the Pacific Rim.
Tang credited the board and volunteers, who contribute their time alongside their professional responsibilities, as well as sponsors, community partners and elected officials, including California State Assemblymember Mike Fong, for making the evening possible.
Addressing the theme “Rooted to Rise,” Tang emphasized that the community’s progress rests on the contributions of earlier generations, cultural traditions and collective support. Those roots, he said, provide the foundation for pursuing new ideas, demonstrating leadership, building businesses and creating opportunities where none previously seemed possible.
He also stressed that success carries a responsibility to help others advance and to build a stronger, more connected community.
Although this year’s honorees represented different backgrounds and industries, Tang noted that they shared a foundation shaped by family, community, culture and personal experience. Their accomplishments reflected both inpidual effort and the networks that supported them along the way.
Over the past 42 years, he added, ABL has helped members grow their businesses and advance their careers through relationships, collaboration and educational opportunities. The organization continues to support the AAPI community while building connections across cultures, generations and industries, locally and globally.
Comedian, emcee and community leader Paul “PK” Kim hosted the evening. The keynote address was delivered by Hailey Le, CEO of AFC EcoPlastics LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of Vietnam-based An Phat Holdings. The company provides bioplastics, compostable resins and environmentally responsible packaging solutions to the North American market.
Le said the evening’s theme resonated deeply with her own experience of building a career across countries. Born and raised in Vietnam, she has spent the past 25 years working in Vietnam, Canada and the United States. Her journey has included roles at multinational companies, launching her own ventures and navigating several periods of reinvention.
She now leads AFC EcoPlastics’ North American business, overseeing international trade in sustainable packaging products manufactured in Vietnam and South Korea for markets including the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Reflecting on her experience, Le said some of her most valuable lessons came from learning to grow again after setbacks. Moving to a new country meant adapting to unfamiliar cultures and business environments while rebuilding professional networks.
Over time, she came to understand that starting over does not mean starting from nothing. Experience, knowledge, values and resilience remain with a person wherever life takes them, providing the roots from which future growth becomes possible.
Le also described the COVID-19 pandemic as a turning point. Before that period, she had been focused on pursuing goals and growing her business while balancing her roles as a wife and mother of two. Slowing down gave her an opportunity to reconsider what she was working toward and whether professional achievement and wealth alone could define a meaningful life.
That reflection reshaped her understanding of success. Beyond titles and financial accomplishments, she said, success should also be measured by the lives one touches, the opportunities one creates for others and the lasting contribution one makes.
Le offered three lessons: take pride in one’s cultural roots, continue learning and reinventing oneself, and help others rise along the way.
She described the emphasis on family, hard work, resilience, excellence, respect and responsibility found in Asian cultures as valuable strengths when building a life and career in a new environment. Although inpiduals cannot control every change in markets or technology, she said, they can choose to remain adaptable and keep learning.
Recalling her volunteer work with a newcomer assistance organization after moving to Canada 15 years ago, Le spoke of highly qualified immigrants—including people with doctoral degrees and senior management experience—who struggled to find employment because they lacked local work experience. Often, she observed, what they needed was an opportunity, a connection or someone willing to place trust in them.
That experience reinforced her belief in organizations such as ABL, which connect people, recognize achievement and create opportunities for future generations. She also expressed her willingness to contribute time and experience as a mentor to emerging entrepreneurs.
Jaxon Lane, this year’s innovation honoree, was founded by Jen Yu and Alex Penfold, with Yu serving as co-founder and CEO. The brand brings Korean skincare expertise to the men’s grooming market and has gained recognition through products such as its Bro Mask. Its approach combines product performance with accessible pricing.
Accepting the award, Yu thanked ABL and shared her journey toward embracing her cultural identity.
A first-generation Chinese immigrant, she grew up in a small Canadian town with few Asian residents. Prejudice from peers left her feeling self-conscious about her background. After moving to California for business school in 2009, she began to rediscover the richness of Asian cultures and develop a stronger sense of pride in her heritage.
Seeing so many Asian American entrepreneurs gathered at the gala, she said, underscored the community’s energy and strength.
Yu and her husband, Penfold, launched Jaxon Lane eight years ago with their own funds after identifying unmet needs in men’s skincare. During the company’s first six years, she continued working full time in a management role at Google while helping build the brand and welcoming two children.
She credited hard work, resilience and a commitment to excellence—values reinforced by her upbringing—with helping her navigate those demands. Having moved from discomfort with her identity to pride in the community’s achievements, she encouraged others to celebrate both their roots and the progress they have made.
Beacon of Excellence honoree Ryoko Rain was founded in 2021 by Garrett James, who serves as its creative director. The luxury streetwear brand draws on Japanese heritage and the values of family, tradition and community. Its signature butterfly motif, attention to quality and distinctive designs have attracted interest from figures in sports and entertainment. Justin Otsuka serves as partner and general manager.
In their acceptance remarks, Otsuka and James thanked ABL, their families and the community that has supported the brand.
Otsuka said James’ parents, wife and many supporters had played an essential role in the company’s development. From the beginning, he noted, James had embraced the principle of “community before commerce,” believing that authentic communities grow through sincere relationships and a shared commitment to helping others.
He also thanked ABL for more than four decades of community building and expressed enthusiasm about becoming more involved.
James offered special thanks to Jordan Young, an ABL board member and his former college basketball teammate, for nominating the brand. He said entrepreneurs are often so focused on sales and growth that opportunities to pause and celebrate progress become especially meaningful.
He also recognized his family’s steadfast support, adding that his wife and daughter, Alba, remind him of the people and priorities that matter beyond running a business.
Philanthropy of the Year honoree Onco-Ballet Foundation was founded by Anna Wassman-Cox to offer free ballet classes to people facing cancer. Through movement, the organization creates opportunities for joy, self-expression and physical and emotional support.
Wassman-Cox, the foundation’s founder and executive director, thanked her nominator, Kim, and the ABL board for their recognition.
She shared that she had been diagnosed with cancer twice before turning 30 and that an injury had ended her professional ballet career. Those experiences gave the evening’s theme particular meaning for her.
By founding Onco-Ballet, she said, she sought to turn personal adversity into support for others, using ballet to help people reconnect with themselves and find moments of joy during uncertain and vulnerable times.
Describing the honor as the first award she had received, Wassman-Cox said it held deep personal significance. She also called for continued attention to cancer awareness, research and support for people from Asian and other perse communities.
Restaurant of the Year honoree Seven Grams is led by CEO Weiwei Shao. Its culinary philosophy seeks a balance between tradition and modern life, combining the warmth of Eastern food traditions with an openness to new ideas. From hand-folded soup dumplings to carefully prepared dishes, the restaurant emphasizes detail, care and sincerity.
Representative Marco and Shao accepted the award on behalf of the team, thanking ABL, Alex, Gary, their employees, customers and the surrounding community.
Marco said the young, growing brand takes pride in the increasing appreciation of Asian cuisine in the American mainstream. Food, he noted, is more than a dining experience: it brings people together and creates a sense of warmth and belonging.
He credited the restaurant’s kitchen, service and management teams for their dedication and said Seven Grams would continue listening to customers, refining its offerings and delivering thoughtful hospitality.
Shao echoed those thanks and invited guests to visit the restaurant, noting that the team had prepared small gifts for attendees as a gesture of appreciation.
Visionary of the Year honoree The Plug Drink was founded in 2019 by Korean American brothers Ray Kim and Justin Kim. The brand focuses on the liver-health supplement market, drawing on traditional herbal concepts and modern science. Justin Kim serves as co-founder and chief operating officer.
The company has expanded from beverages into pill formats and broadened its U.S. reach through digital marketing and distribution relationships with Total Wine & More and KeHE Distributors. In 2024, The Plug ranked No. 147 on the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies.
In their acceptance remarks, the brothers thanked ABL’s board, David, Raymond James, their families, partners, employees and customers.
Ray Kim said that growing up Korean American in Los Angeles made the recognition especially meaningful. He credited earlier generations of immigrants and Asian American trailblazers with opening doors for younger entrepreneurs.
Justin Kim said that, in the company’s seventh year, witnessing the growing influence of Korean and other Asian cultures in the United States had been deeply encouraging. He viewed the award as both recognition and a responsibility to create opportunities for the next generation.
He also shared updates on the brand’s retail expansion and recruitment of former senior executives from functional beverage company REBBL, describing those developments as important milestones.
The brothers said they would continue representing the Asian American community and fostering connections between Eastern and Western cultures.
The evening also included a cocktail reception, sponsor recognition, award presentations and a raffle. Singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer JEONG provided musical entertainment, drawing on blues, soul and R&B influences.
Through the stories of its five honorees, the gala highlighted the connections among cultural heritage, entrepreneurship and community service. In his written message, Tang encouraged the community to honor those who paved the way, strengthen present-day relationships and create opportunities for those who follow.
ABL’s leadership brings together professionals in law, finance, accounting and wealth management. Its officers include President Alexander Tang of Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP; Vice President Eric Wu of Leech Tishman; Treasurer Jordan Young of Hutchinson and Bloodgood LLP; and Secretary David Yi of Raymond James.
Board members include Jacqueline Yu of The Law Offices of Jacqueline D. Yu; Kim Nguyen of U.S. Bank Private Wealth Management; Evelyn Moon of Evelyn Moon Law PC; and Zhi Tan of EY.
The advisory board comprises Gregory Karns of Cox, Castle & Nicholson LLP; Ranya Ku of IMA Financial; and Mark Liu of Rimon Law. Logan Lakis serves as association director. Together, they contribute professional experience and perspectives to support ABL’s work and community connections.
